Surgical Internship Program

The typical surgical intern applicant is an individual that has: (1)completed a general internship program and desires more surgical training prior to applying for a formal surgical residency program, or (2) has completed a general internship program and has unsuccessfully applied for a surgical residency program, or (3) has completed a general internship program/or equilivant and desires additional surgical training prior to joining a private practice.

From a historical perspective, starting in 1983, Hollywood Animal Hospital has taken on and advised nine 3rd year surgical residents (for three months duration each). Six refereed papers have been published and all individuals are currently boarded. Twelve additional individuals have held one year surgical internship positions in preparation for surgical residency application. Nine are either in or have completed a surgical residency. One individual finished a residency in ophthalmology. One is a current surgical intern. Four additional individuals (2 from Japan and 2 from Germany) have not applied for residencies and have fulfilled their stated goal of returning to private practice. One person is to reapply for a surgical residency.

At the end of the day, the aforementioned individuals were all highly motivated, dedicated, self-starters that achieved their success based on their own merits that they brought to the table. The scope of their achievement ranges from, Dean, head of department, to highly successful surgeons.

Publication of referred papers by surgical interns is highly desirable and encouraged. Dr. Jon F. Dee has 40 plus publications/book chapters and one textbook on Canine Sports Medicine and Surgery, in addition to having given several hundred national and international lectures.

A surgical internship position is available for that individual interested in an additional year of surgical exposure prior to applying for a surgical residency.

The program begins on June 14, 2010 through July 16, 2011 with early release dependant on 2010 residency match. A salary of $50,000 for the 13 months with bonuses available for emergency surgical assistance of the general interns. Two weeks vacation and a weeks meeting time away from the practice is provided as well as financial assistance for those meetings. Dr. Jon Dee will be the prime mentor for this individual’s exam room and surgical time with assistance from the other hospital associates. A five to six day work week including some time in the mentoring of the general interns will be the norm. Additional responsibilities include providing aid in the training of the general intern class both in surgery and medicine and rotational surgical support for the present intern class.
